What is a fursuit partial, and is it the right first suit?
· 2 min read
A fursuit partial is a head, a pair of handpaws, a pair of footpaws and usually a tail. You wear it with your own clothing, so the costume covers the parts that read as the character and your outfit does the rest. It is the most common way into the hobby.
Why a partial before a full suit?
Three reasons, in the order they will matter to you. It costs less, so a first mistake is a cheaper mistake. It is far cooler to wear, which matters more than new wearers expect. And it is more forgiving of fit, because a head and paws are close to one size fits most while a bodysuit is not.
What a partial does not include
- No bodysuit, so your arms and torso are your own clothes
- No legs, so trousers or shorts do that work
- Sometimes no tail, which is why the contents list matters more than the category name
How hot does a partial get?
Hotter than you think, and the head is most of it. Plan on a break every 30 to 45 minutes, drink more water than feels necessary, and have somebody with you who can lead you out of a crowd. Overheating in costume creeps up, and the first symptom is often that you stop noticing you are overheating.
